Whether you're concerned about being a certified organic facility or you just want to practice "safe" gardening, don't forget to consider the organic-ness of your compost. In "What Not to Feed Your Composter",it was mentioned to be careful about fruit peelings that may contain pesticide residue.
Many green homeowners will compost their grass clippings that probably have experienced a huge amount of non-organinc fertilizers and pesticides. I'll save the argument about why you should just leave the clipping on the lawn to do their natural thing for another time. For those that have a brush pile for tree trimmings, again, be careful if they have had any kind of non-organic sprays. Even if you personally don't spray your trees, municipalities are notorious for helping us out by spraying the trees on our out-lawns. And don't forget the regular mosquito spraying and what that means about our pesticide levels.
Is it possible to stay organic in today's culture? I feel it important to do the part we can, and pay attention to our actions - leaving those elements out of our control for another day. This means, minimize our own use of pesticides and disease-mitigating sprays.
