This Might Take Some Time

Yeah...patience, please.  I'm in the process of republishing a brand new site for Erica's Garden.  I decided to start with a pre-filled template so I could capture all the goodies it had to offer.  So, for awhile, you'll see a lot of articles and remnants of the demo site intermixed with gardening content.  Please be paitent with me as it develops into the new site.  Who knows, this may take quite a few iterations to get it just right.

Flow-Through Worm Bin

My engineering hat went on this weekend when I decided to design a mid-size flow-through worm bin for production of both worm castings and worm population growth.  Rather than build yet another worm box, I decided to tackle a flow-through design where the castings can be removed from the bottom of the unit without disturbing the worm's dinner table.

Food (compostable garbage) goes in the top, gets composted by microbes and eaten by the worms, they digest the food, and poop.  Their poo, known as worm castings, is deposited below their living and eating area and slowly find their way to the very bottom of the bin.  Gently removing the bottom layer of castings reveals the next layer of castings that will spend a little more time conditioning.  More food on top, and the cycle continues.
My goals?  Efficient design, inexpensive, serviceable, and reproducible.  I decided upon a compact square trash container for the base, and added a metal grate, and cut access and ventilation holes.  The usual practice of drilling tons of 1/16" holes all around the bin just doesn't work for me, so I placed nice, neat, round aluminum vents in 2" holes at the top sides.
Pictures are coming, as well as the worms.  I'll post updates in the following weeks.

Dedicated to Miss Erica

This site honors Erica Marie Daniel Kepner, PhD, who lived her life with an almost obsessive passion and dedication. She lost her fight with Cancer at a young 26 years old, but left her legacy to all who knew her.
